Why We're Called 'Grant Genie'

Have you ever wondered why we're called 'Grant Genie'? We hope it's pretty obvious as our platform helps charities and non-profits to find and access grant funding, but the truth is, we were not always called Grant Genie...

We originally set out with a grand vision: Charity Radar. It perfectly captured our mission – to be a central hub where charities could keep track of everything important.

But, as with many great ideas, there was a snag. Companies House, the official body overseeing company registration in the UK, deemed "charity" a reserved word. Our dreams of Charity Radar were put on hold.

But we weren't deterred! We brainstormed new names, all focused on the core value we bring to charities – a one-stop shop for anything charities need. After much deliberation, On Radar emerged. It resonated with us for several reasons:

• Focus and Clarity: On Radar is simple, direct, and memorable. It conveys the essence of our platform – a watchful eye on everything that matters to your charity.
•  Empowerment: Being "on radar" implies staying informed and in control. That's exactly what we want for our users – to feel empowered and confident in managing their donor relationships, grant applications, and overall impact.
• Actionable Insights: A radar isn't just about seeing things; it's about interpreting the information and taking action. On Radar goes beyond basic data storage. We provide insights and analytics to help charities make informed decisions and maximise their fundraising potential.
• Availability: Let's be honest, a great name needs a great domain name to match. Thankfully, both onradar.co.uk and onradar.uk were available, solidifying our choice.

After a while, it became clear that the part of On Radar that charities really wanted was the grant matching platform. So On Radar evolved again into Grant Genie, but we kept the radar imagery, which works really well with the concept of looking for grant funding.
